GatwickAirport has once again, and for the seventh year running, received the accolade for the BestMajorUKAirport. GatwickAirport beat off three airports to win the title, including nearby Heathrow and its northern contender Manchester. The award was presented last night (Monday 6 September) at the Travel Bulletin Star Awards.

Travel Bulletin is one of the UK’s leading weekly trade magazines and its annual Travel Awards ceremony, voted for by travel agents, recognises the achievements of top companies across the leisure and travel industry. Based on passenger feedback, travel agents last night officially declared GatwickAirport the top UK airport.

Nearly £1 billion is being invested in the UK’s second largest airport over the next five years to transform it into an even better airport for its passengers and airlines. More self-service machines are being introduced to reduce check-in times, improvements in security procedures have already delivered benefits to passengers, with 95% of all passengers now clearing security within just five minutes, and an investment in new baggage reclaim belts will significantly cut the time spent waiting for luggage.

Hundreds of millions of pounds is also being spent modernising both terminal buildings to create a more welcoming environment, for passengers with a greater sense of space and a more contemporary feel. The retail offering is also being revitalised to give passengers greater choice and to help them enjoy their downtime before they fly off.

Commenting on the industry award, Mike Luddy, Chief Commercial Officer at GatwickAirport, said: “At GatwickAirport, we are focused on making sure that the passenger receives a friendly and positive experience at every step of their journey, from the moment they enter the terminal buildings, through check-in and security, right through until they fly off or head home. This award is testament that we are achieving that but we recognise there is still much more to do and we are confident that through our investment programme we will be able to make GatwickAirportLondon’s airport of choice.”
