Luton Airport hosts CAA CEO for terminal tour

London Luton Airport (LLA) recently hosted the Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Rob Bishton, and his team for a tour of the terminal.

This is part of LLA’s continuing commitment to enhance accessibility for passengers, especially those who require assisted travel, the number of which has increased by 30% in this category.

Purpose-built assisted travel lounge for passengers

LLA’s new purpose-built Assisted Travel lounge, set to open later in 2025, was a highlight of the tour. The lounge has been designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring a sensory space, adult changing areas, wheelchair charging points, adjustable lighting, flight information screens, and a variety of seating options to ensure a comfortable experience for passengers with assisted travel needs.

Accessibility familiarisation day

During the visit, the CAA also shadowed LLA staff during the airport’s latest Accessibility Familiarisation Day. This event allowed passengers who require additional support to experience the airport environment and learn about the assistance available to them. Representatives from the CAA had the chance to engage with participants, hear about their experiences, and observe their journey through the airport.

“We were delighted to welcome the CAA to the airport and to have the opportunity to showcase LLA’s soon-to-open Assisted Travel Lounge. The lounge is a hugely important investment for the airport, and we were thrilled to receive such positive feedback on the enhanced facilities that our assisted travel passengers will benefit from.” Said Alberto Martin, Chief Executive Officer at London Luton Airport.

Commitment to accessibility for passengers at LLA

Mr Martin, also commented: “London Luton Airport is committed to maintaining an accessible and inclusive environment for all. Initiatives such as our Accessibility Familiarisation Days, along with our regular Accessibility Forum, provide valuable opportunities for our teams to exchange ideas and feedback with passengers with a wide range of assisted travel requirements – all of which supports our commitment to delivering a consistently simple and friendly passenger experience.”

CAA’s perspective on inclusive air travel

Rob Bishton, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, commented: “We believe that everyone should have fair access to air travel and work with the industry to drive improvements. London Luton Airport is setting a positive example of how the aviation sector is stepping up to support disabled passengers and give more people the opportunity to take to the skies. LLA’s assisted travel airport lounge is fantastic and a prime example of how the whole sector can better service its customers.”

EasyJet’s commitment to accessible travel

Captain David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet, added: “easyJet is committed to making travel accessible for everyone. Our goal is to ensure that every passenger feels supported, valued, and confident when they choose to fly with us. Working with London Luton to support their Accessibility Day is just one of the ways we are continuously working to enhance our customers’ experience, as well as through comprehensive training and collaborating with accessibility experts through our Assisted Travel Advisory Board, to ensure we are inclusive to all.”
