Hamad International Airport (DOH), ranked as the World’s Best Airport and Airport Shopping by Skytrax 2024, has officially opened its long-awaited Concourses D and E, marking a major milestone in its expansion. This development boosts the airport’s capacity to over 65 million passengers annually, solidifying Doha’s position as a key global aviation hub.
Details on Hamad Airport’s expansion
The expansion project, which began in 2018, culminates in the completion of Concourses D and E, following the unveiling of the ORCHARD—a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden—in 2022. With a 14% increase in terminal size, now spanning 845,000 square meters, the addition of 17 new aircraft contact gates brings the total to 62, nearly 40% more than before. This expansion reduces bus transfers and enhances connectivity, supporting streamlined operations.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “Hamad International Airport is more than a gateway; it is a vital pillar of Qatar’s growth and global connectivity… While many global airport expansions have faced delays, we are proud to have delivered this major development ahead of schedule… This development allows us to meet the evolving demands of global travel while reinforcing Qatar’s position as a leading aviation hub.”

Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, said: “The opening of Concourses D and E marks a significant milestone in expanding our capacity and enhancing operational efficiency… This combined development streamlines passenger flow, optimises resource management, and strengthens airline connectivity.”
The new concourses introduce smart technology, including self-boarding systems for faster document verification and reduced wait times, ensuring smoother transitions for passengers. The expansion also strengthens the airport’s global connectivity by increasing gate capacity and optimising flight operations, offering more direct routes to key destinations.
Passenger comfort is enhanced with upgraded facilities, including new premium retail outlets and global dining brands. Over 9 new retail outlets and food and beverage venues are added, expanding Qatar Duty Free’s offerings by 2,700 square meters. This cements Hamad International Airport as a destination for shopping, dining, and unforgettable experiences.
Sustainability remains a priority, with Concourses D and E designed for GSAS 4-Star Design & Build Certification and targeting LEED Gold Certification. The development incorporates energy-efficient systems and innovative water management solutions. Accessibility is also a key focus, with universal design principles ensuring a seamless experience for all travellers.
