New mural project at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport celebrates waterfront and Indigenous heritage

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) has announced a new mural project on the exterior of its passenger terminal, supported by the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto programme and created by Jakarundi Graphics. This initiative reinforces the airport’s commitment to showcasing Toronto’s vibrancy and diversity through public art.

Details of the mural project 

A stencil-making workshop, hosted by the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre and facilitated by Jakarundi Graphics, will take place on 23 February. Open to the public, the workshop will draw inspiration from nature and the geography of the Great Lakes, while acknowledging the airport’s location on Indigenous lands and waters. Jakarundi Graphics emphasises skill-sharing and community collaboration, aligning with the airport’s values of integrating art into everyday life.

Neil Pakey, President and CEO of Nieuport Aviation, stated, “All art in our terminal reflects Toronto’s diversity. This mural, developed with StreetARToronto and Jakarundi Graphics, will draw inspiration from waterfront residents and students, creating a striking piece visible from the waterfront.”

RJ Steenstra, President and CEO of PortsToronto, added, “This mural celebrates our city’s spirit and honours the land’s heritage. It connects the airport to the community, showcasing the creativity of those who live, work, and study here.”

Caitlin Taguibao, a mural artist with Jakarundi Graphics, shared, “The island’s ecosystem has been a refuge for me. I’m excited to help bring together the voices and stories of our shared waterfront through this project.”
