Hong Kong International Airport has maintained smooth operations amid Tropical Cyclone Toraji, with minimal flight disruptions and additional support measures in place for passengers and staff.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported largely smooth operations despite the ongoing impact of Tropical Cyclone Toraji. With the Airport Emergency Centre activated, flight and runway operations continue as scheduled, and the Flight Rescheduling Control System has not been required. Today (14 November), HKIA expects to handle approximately 1,063 flights. Since last night at 23:00, 10 passenger flights have been cancelled, and 20 have experienced delays.
The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has closely coordinated with the MTR Corporation, which added two extra early-morning Airport Express Link services to the city. The last train departed at 01:45, ensuring that passengers and staff had transportation options available.
With the issuance of Typhoon Signal No. 8, AAHK implemented a Queue Ticket System for taxis. Between 03:00 and 05:00, five flights landed, and around 200 passengers used the system to queue for taxis at its peak. By 05:00, the passenger flow had cleared, and operations remained stable.
In order to accommodate passengers during this period, AAHK set up a rest area within the terminal, equipped with 500 seats, mobile charging stations, bottled water, snacks and blankets. Approximately 200 airport staff stayed overnight in two designated rest areas, while shuttle services between Tung Chung and HKIA had been arranged for other personnel.
AAHK encourages passengers to stay informed of any changes by checking flight statuses through their airlines, the Hong Kong International Airport website, or the “My HKG” mobile app before heading to the airport. Given potential delays in ground transport, travellers are advised to allow extra time for their journey.
