SPACERSEAT launched this week at the World Travel Catering & Onboard service exposition in Hamburg offering extra knee space without the need to change seat pitch.

SPACERSEAT

The SPACERSEAT has been designed to provide additional knee space for taller passengers (male 6’ 1” female 5’ 11”) travelling in an economy standard seat. Once placed on the seat, the SPACERSEAT provides 2 inches of extra knee space and 6 inches of additional leg space as well as greater comfort than the existing “slim line” seat.

SPACERSEAT was founded in 2013 as a reply on the question; how to offer passengers extra seat space without changing the seat pitch?

Soon after that SPACERSEAT worked with Engineers, designers, airline specialists and ergonomic specialists to develop the innovative design. It discovered it was not the seat that had to be changed; it was the position of the passenger which needed to be adapted to suit taller people. Since its concept, it was named winner of the prestigious Dutch Aviation/Aerospace  Innovation price in the Netherlands.

The products official launch was at the Dutch Vacation Exposition (Vakantiebeurs Utrecht) in January this year. SPACERSEAT was tested by more than 4000 visitors. 95% of the visitors were really surprised by the extra space and comfort.

SPACERSEAT is much more than comfort and space.  Under the 3D Active ventilated fabric you can find three layers of high quality foam different in shape and stiffness. This is where the real innovation of the SPACERSEAT begins. The passenger will sit approximately 2 inch higher, but more important, the pelvis of the passenger is rotated forward. This means the passenger sits in a so called active position. This position again gives extra space and the passenger breathes much easier. The combination of this makes that the flight will be less tiring.

As the SPACERSEAT is not part of the existing seat and can only be used when the “seat belt light” is off, expensive seat tests are not necessary. In addition, the SPACERSEAT is a so called carry on item – this means that it is not considered as extra hand luggage. The item weighs 940 grams. With two straps it can be easily attached to a luggage trolley or any other kind of handbag.

Since the introduction 2 months ago more than 1000 pieces have been sold to travellers. SPACERSEAT also aims to demonstrate to airlines that they could rent the product to passengers for a reasonable price.

The SPACERSEAT is currently retailing at £60 or €65
