Australia’s Melbourne Airport has officially opened the new Terminal 4 facility in a ceremony marking the occasion.
Federal Treasurer, The Hon. Scott Morrison MP, officially opened Australia’s latest domestic terminal at Melbourne Airport on 09 December 2015. The ceremony follows gradual opening to passengers in two stages welcoming airlines Tigerair Australia and Jetstar over the last few months and Regional Express Airlines in early 2016.
Melborne Airport’s Terminal 4 is located to the south of Terminal 3 and is constructed on 20,000 sqm over three levels. The facility can accommodate up to 10 million passengers a year.
Since opening to the public in August 2015, almost 1.1 million passengers have travelled through the facility making the most of the state-of-the –art facilities.
Melbourne Airport Terminal 4 is world’s first to open as a complete self-service operation
Terminal 4 is the world’s first terminal to open as a complete self-service operation. Coupled with automated bag drop facilities, the check-in process provides passengers with a quick and easy start to their journey.
The Terminal also includes a shopping and dining experience in the departure lounge on level 1 where more than 30 retail, food and beverage stores have opened catering for all tastes and budgets.
Terminal 4 is also accessible to a new transport hub a few minutes’ walk from the facility. Here passengers will be able to access car parking, drop-off and pick-up points, buses and taxis.
Melbourne Airport CEO, Mr Lyell Strambi, said: “This official opening of T4 is another milestone in the transformation of Melbourne Airport – which has responded to the growth of domestic aviation in Australia.”
“Terminal 4 provides our passengers with a new level of service, and our airline customers the room to keep growing their business to meet demand for air travel.”
“The construction of Terminal 4 was a huge effort to coordinate around a 24/7 airport operation, and I would like to thank our airline customers, project managers and construction team for their patience and perseverance.”
