A new international terminal has opened at Chandigarh Airport in the Indian state of Punjab following unprecedented growth during the last 10 years.
The Airports Authority of India and Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, opened a new civil air terminal for international passengers at Chandigarh Airport in the state of Punjab. Passenger growth has increased from 69 million in 2004-05 to 188 million in 2014-15 with a 12 percent growth rate per year. The Airport’s exceptional growth prompted building of a new international terminal on an area of 53,400 sq. metres with a peak hour handling capacity of 1600 passengers.

Features of the new terminal include 48 Check in counters, four long (72M) baggage conveyor belts, three passenger boarding bridges (aerobridges) and parking for 500 cars. On the apron side, it has capacity for parking 8 aircraft, 7 of ‘C’ Type and one of ‘E’ Type and the Cargo Apron for Two ‘C’ Type aircraft. The new facility has cargo apron measuring 120m x 110m.
The Airports Authority of India has introduced a number of ‘green’ features to the terminal which include, LED Lighting, Energy Efficient Chillers, Double Insulated Roofting System, Rain Water Harvesting and Re-use of treated water.
At a cost of Rs. 65,000 per sq. metre, it is hoped the new terminal will lead to economic benefit for the airport vicinity and boost the overall connectivity for Tourism and Trade in the Country.
