A positive start in 2014 for Bordeaux, with a 3.8% increase in passenger traffic

In January, Bordeaux airport’s passenger traffic increased by 3.8% compared to January 2013, with 295,800 passengers, 202,100 of whom were on domestic flights (+3.8%) and 93,700 on international flights (+3.8%). January has been a bleak month for most major regional airports in France, some of which are seeing negative growth in traffic, and has led to a decrease in the number of seats offered by airline companies. Bordeaux is bucking this trend with excellent passenger numbers on flights (+7 points). Traffic this month was disrupted by two strike movements on 24^th and 30^th January.

Scheduled domestic traffic continues its growth with +3.9%. Flights to Paris are showing very good scores: Charles de Gaulle +2.1% and Orly +9.4%.  Also noteworthy are lines with competition between two airline companies such as Lille (Hop!, easyjet) and Strasbourg (Hop!, Volotea) which have increased by 9.2% and 9.9% respectively. Bastia (Voltoea) is showing the strongest growth within France with +42.4%. On the strength of its success this summer, the line has been kept open for the winter season.

Growth of 4.1% for scheduled international traffic, with three international destinations in particular doing very well: Amsterdam (+24% for KLM), Madrid (+11.7% for Iberia) and Lisbon (+6.5% in total for TAP and easyjet). The most impressive growth has been displayed by Rome (+47% total for Air France and Ryanair), Venice (+24.9% for Volotea) and Geneva (+14% for easyjet).

Low cost traffic is also on the rise with +12.9%. 89,300 passengers flew low cost in January. Lyon (+12.5%, 18,400 passengers) Geneva (+14%, 11,900 passengers) and London (+10.7%, 10,000 passengers), the three key low cost lines, are operated by easyjet and represent 44% of growth in low cost flights.
