Expending energy at an airport is an everyday occurrence. At Orlando International Airport, so is conserving it. Which is why the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s (GOAA) Purchasing and Material Control Building received the highly coveted ENERGY STAR certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This recognition signifies it performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for superior energy efficiency.
“GOAA is pleased to accept the EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said James Rose, Deputy Executive Director – Business Services and Facilities. “Through this achievement, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy and operating costs.”
Commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR certification must meet strict EPA performance levels, use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
“GOAA strives to improve its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its buildings,” said Jeffrey Daniels, Assistant Director of Maintenance and GOAA’s Sustainability Manager.
To earn the ENERGY STAR certification, GOAA’s Purchasing and Material Control Building:
- Uses high efficiency, T8, fluorescent interior lighting
- Automatically controls lighting with occupancy sensors in storage areas
- Is designed for staff comfort with occupant accessibility to lighting controls in common areas, offices and conference rooms
- Utilizes low flow plumbing fixtures and aerators to reduce use of potable water
- Is landscaped with Florida-friendly, drought tolerant plantings and irrigated with reclaimed water
Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.
