Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER) has received two important certificates for strict compliance with hygiene measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. BER is now the first German airport to receive the Airport Health Accreditation from Airport Council International (ACI). As part of this certification, ACI assesses the hygiene measures and procedures that have been introduced at airports after the COVID-19 pandemic began. Shortly before, BER was also the first German airport to be certified by Deutsches Hygienezertifikat. Both certificates guarantee a high level of safety for passengers during their stay in Terminals 1 and 5 of the new airport.
For both certificates, the equipment in the terminals and the processes from check-in to baggage claim were checked according to strict specifications. These include equipping the terminals with plexiglass panes, distance markings or disinfectant dispensers as well as communication with passengers as well as microbiological swabs from surfaces in the check-in areas, gate areas or elevators by Deutsches Hygienezertifikat.
Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, said: “We are thankful for the recognition and are proud of the two certificates. Right from the start, we implemented numerous measures at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport to minimise the risk of infection for passengers and employees during the Corona pandemic. Our efforts to achieve a high level of safety are confirmed by the two certificates. We will continue to do everything we can to maintain this standard.”
Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Director General of ACI World, said: “I wish to extend my congratulations to you and your team at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt in becoming accredited in the ACI Airport Health Accreditation programme. This achievement demonstrates to passengers, staff, regulators, and governments that BER offers all travellers a safe airport experience reducing health risks, creating trust and thus make an important contribution to revitalising flight operations. The recovery of the industry from the impacts of COVID-19 will require a coordinated, global effort, and BER’s accreditation shows that it is committed to high standards of health and hygiene that accord with globally-recognised standards and protocols.”
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI Europe, said: “Faced with the COVID-19 crisis, the sector has moved quickly to forge new standards to ensure health and safety for passengers and staff. The Berlin Brandenburg Airport Company has diligently implemented the health and hygiene measures according to the ACI guidelines at BER. It is the result of hard work and great dedication.”
Dr. Gerlinde Wagner, CEO of Deutsches Hygienezertifikat, added: “The airport company attaches great importance to impeccable hygiene and cleanliness. The facilities at BER have been optimised for this and the airport offers all the prerequisites for its customers to feel that they are in good hands.”
