Local Maori culture is set to be woven into the design of a new airport terminal on the North Island of New Zealand.
Initially set to have a capacity of 9 million passengers, by 2025 the airport is expected to be capable of handling up to 25 million making it by far the biggest airport in Pakistan.
To keep up with rapid growth, the airport on Canada's eastern coast has been given the go ahead on an expansion that will increase its terminal size by 50 per cent.
Alongside long-term considerations, the airport has also put forward proposals for the next stage in the airport’s phased development ahead of a planning application to increase capacity to accommodate 12 million passengers a year.
The proposed design cuts out the need for flyers from the west of England to travel into London Paddington before doubling back on themselves to reach Heathrow.
The granting of the contract marks a step forward from the first phase of renovations which were completed eight years ago.
Instead of a traditional ground breaking ceremony, the three main parties on the project buried a solid bronze hand shake, a water bottle made of recycled glass and an action plan for fossil fuel-free travel in a time capsule for future generations.
Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo airports will be expanded and more services added in response to rapid growth in the number of passengers.
