Hong Kong’s sustainable development opportunities discussed

The Secretary General of ICAO, Dr. Fang Liu , has undertaken a bilateral meeting with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, China, Mrs. Carrie Lam, during her mission to this Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China.

Their discussions focused on aviation’s unique and pivotal role as a catalyst of sustainable development and Hong Kong‘s particularly strategic opportunities to make major contributions to the regional and global momentum in this regard, given its status as a global hub for air transport.

The meeting was part of an extensive series of activities with the leadership of Hong Kong’s air transport and logistics sectors, accompanied by visits to the infrastructure and educational facilities that support the region’s connectivity and growth.

This included meetings, among others, with Mr. Frank Chan, Secretary for Transport and Housing; Ms. Teresa Cheng, SC, Secretary for Justice; and Mr. Simon Li, Director-General of Civil Aviation. Following tours of their facilities, Dr Liu also met with the CEOs of the Airport Authority Hong Kong, Hong Kong Airlines, the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal and Cathay Pacific Dragon Airways.

Previously Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment has commented upon the sustainability of the airport, and the implementation of a waste management system in the airport in March 2018 was a step in the right direction for the airport.

Mr Wong said: “More than just a place to serve visitors from all over the world, the HKIA is also a place where over 70,000 staff work together every day and which can be described as a microcosm of society. Waste management is not only one of the most pressing environmental problems faced by the community of Hong Kong, but also one of the major environmental challenges for the HKIA. I am delighted to learn that the AA is willing and able to implement waste separation, food recycling and food waste recovery to reduce the waste generated by the airport.”
