One hundred households from the municipalities surrounding Brussels Airport (BRU)—Zaventem, Machelen, Steenokkerzeel, and Kortenberg—now have the opportunity to sign up for a year of green energy supplied by Brussels Airport Company. This pilot project, in collaboration with the energy platform Bolt and part of the European Stargate project, aims to test the feasibility of a small-scale green energy scheme for local residents.

Details of the green-energy project

BRU is committed to sustainability and achieving net zero carbon emissions for its operations by 2030. Although the airport currently does not produce a surplus of green energy, it anticipates reaching this in the future. At present, Brussels Airport generates around 9,200 megawatt-hours of green energy from its solar panels, with plans to expand its capacity. In 2024, an additional 65,000 m² of solar panels were added to the cargo zone, and by 2027, the airport aims to generate around 24,000 megawatt-hours per year.

Starting in February 2025, the selected 100 households will receive locally generated green energy from the airport’s solar panels at a preferential tariff. Households can sign up via the Bolt platform, which will manage the logistics. This pilot offers a discount of about €124 off an average household’s annual energy bill. Once 100 households have registered, the offer will close.

At the end of the year-long trial, participants will have the option to either continue with Bolt or choose another energy supplier. Feedback from the households will be gathered to inform future developments and share insights with other airports involved in the Stargate project, helping to shape the future of participatory green energy schemes.
