In February 2024, the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA) unveiled its investment programme for Katowice Airport (KTW), covering 2024 to 2032. This programme focuses on expanding passengers, aircraft maintenance, and cargo infrastructure, with a significant addition being the development of a Multimodal Goods and Fuel Delivery Hub with a Railway Siding Connection. The largest and most expensive project within this plan is the construction of a Central Passenger Terminal.

The expansion is driven by traffic forecasts predicting 7.5 million passengers by 2026 and 10 million by 2030, necessitating substantial infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growing demand. In 2024, several projects were either completed or initiated.

Details of the investment programme at Katowice Airport

One of the first completed investments was the new Car Park P4, opened before summer 2024. Located next to the roundabout at the intersection of road No. 913 and railway line No. 182, the facility offers 757 parking spaces, complete with advanced lighting, monitoring, and parking systems.

The most significant ongoing project is the construction of the Multimodal Goods and Fuel Delivery Hub, which began in September 2024. This facility, funded by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), will cost PLN 117.3m and is set for completion by June 2026. It includes a railway siding connecting to railway line 182, with facilities for unloading goods and fuels, as well as a system for filling airport tankers in the restricted area.

Another major initiative is the development of a new base for the airport’s maintenance departments. Budimex SA started construction in September 2024, which will include a two-storey office and social building, a 2,294 m² garage/workshop hall, and essential infrastructure. The first phase, valued at PLN 20 million, is expected to be ready by Q2 2025.

Additionally, the construction of Car Park P5 began in August 2024, with approximately 900 new parking spaces planned for completion by Q2 2025. The investment is valued at PLN 10.5m.

Preparations are also underway for further developments, including the expansion of Car Parks P1 and P5, and the new headquarters for the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Department. In October 2024, GTL SA announced a tender for the design of the Central Passenger Terminal, with the agreement expected to be signed by the end of 2025.
