Making Europe the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky in the world to fly in, SESAR JU

At Airspace World 2024 in Geneva, International Airport Review Editor Holly Miles caught up with Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.

Andreas discussed how they are trying to “build the digital European sky and making Europe the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky to fly in the world.”

The digital European sky is mostly about data says Andreas, “the airport has data, the airline has data and the ANSP has data, Eurocontrol has data, but we are not using it in a very efficient way. And digitalising means that we are sharing data, analysing it and improving air traffic management, adding capacity, efficiency and sustainability and safety.”

The way to modernise is for the “air traffic management sector to embrace digital technologies.”

SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking are really looking to embrace:

• Artificial intelligence, this is a game-changer which will allow them to utilise and manage the data. 
• Drones and eVTOL how can we create the right environment for this new sector?
• Sustainability to decarbonise aviation.

Andreas also answers the question “what is standing in the way of airspace modernisation?”
