The Aena airport network has closed August 2022 with 27,301,674 passengers, which is 7.4 per cent shy of pre-pandemic levels.

Airports in the Aena network closed August 2022 with 27,301,674 passengers. This figure is 7.4 per cent shy of pre-pandemic levels, meaning that 92.6 per cent of the traffic recorded in August 2019 has already been recovered.

In addition, 223,260 aircraft were in operation, which is equivalent to a recovery of 95.1 per cent compared to 2019, while 78,468 tonnes of cargo were transported, representing a decrease of 6.3 per cent compared to the same month of 2019.

Of the total number of travellers recorded in August 2022, 27,236,102 were commercial passengers, of which 18,429,626 travelled on international flights, 12.7 per cent less than in August 2019. Meanwhile, 8,806,476 passengers travelled on domestic flights, which is 6.3 per cent more than before the pandemic.

In the cumulative period up to the eighth month of 2022, a recovery of 85.3 per cent of passenger traffic was reached compared to the same period of 2019. From January to August 2022, 159,308,824 travellers passed through airports in the Aena network, 1,477,464 aircraft movements were recorded (7.7 per cent less than in 2019) and 651,950 tonnes of cargo were transported, which is three per cent less than in the same period of 2019.

Passengers

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) recorded the highest number of passengers in the eighth month of the year, with 4,985,968, representing a decrease of 13.9 per cent compared with August 2019.

It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport (BCN), with 4,464,875 (-17.5 per cent compared to 2019), Palma de Mallorca Airport, (PMI) with 4,161,847 (- 2.8 per cent), Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), with 2,053,341 (-6.9 per cent), Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC), with 1,512,008 passengers (-10.6 per cent), Ibiza Airport (IBZ), with 1,361,379 (-1.1 per cent), and Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), with 1,090,494 passengers, representing an increase of 0.8 per cent compared to the same month of 2019.

Operations

As for the number of aircraft in operation, the airport with the highest number in August was MAD, with a total of 31,575 (-15 per cent compared to 2019), followed by PMI, with 28,838 (+0.2 per cent), BCN, with 27,779 flights (-15 per cent), AGP, with 15,159 (-3.1 per cent), IBZ, with 12,827 (+4.6 per cent) LPA, with 9,910 (-6.6 per cent) and ALC, with 9,795 aircraft movements, representing a decrease of 8.9 per cent compared to the same month of 2019.

Cargo

Regarding the transport of cargo, the airport that recorded the highest volume of cargo in August was MAD, with 43,511 tonnes, which is 1.9 per cent less than in the same month of 2019. It is followed by BCN, which recorded 13,324 tonnes (+one per cent compared to 2019), Zaragoza Airport (ZAZ), with 10,058 tonnes (-35.6 per cent), and Vitoria Airport (VIT), with 5,423 tonnes, which is 31.9 per cent more than in the same month of 2019.
