Mumbai International Airport, is awarded the ‘Energy Efficient Unit’ Award, recognising its outstanding efforts towards energy efficiency.
The Confederation of India Industry (CII) has granted Mumbai International Airport (BOM) the ‘Energy Efficient Unit’ Award at its 22nd National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2021. The award lauds the airport for its tireless efforts in sustainable and green initiatives, most importantly in assessing the reduction in specific energy consumption, innovation in identifying and implementing energy-saving projects, green supply chain, waste management, GHG Emission and climate change initiatives. The award ceremony was held virtually between 24 and 27 August 2021.
Mumbai International has accomplished numerous developments to address the challenges of climate change under environment management. Among the many initiatives undertaken by the airport to control the environment, including: a carbon management system, carbon neutrality, renewable energy installations, wastewater recycling and an effective waste management system enhancement in renewable energy capacity, are just a handful of some of the projects that the airport has been a forerunner in. Mumbai Airport has taken several steps during the pandemic to optimise energy consumption, resulting in energy usage to 35 per cent. Furthermore, the airport also has saved substantial energy of around 38.5 million units (kWh) due to its consistent and sustainable approach towards energy efficiency measures, which has resulted in the reduction of 31,581 units (tCO2e) of GHG Emissions.
The airport is the first and the only in India to publish the Sustainability Report as per the latest GRI Standards. Moreover, Mumbai International Airport is the first Indian airport to hold the platinum rating within the Existing Building (O&M) Rating System for its environmentally sustainable profile. In addition, the airport also owns an Organic Waste Converter (OWC) project, which requires a biomechanical composting system with the capacity of 1.5MT/day. The OWC facility boasts a solar capacity of 5kWp for providing green power for its operations. Furthermore, compost generated from the system is used internally for gardens and horticulture purposes.
Mumbai International Airport is an ISO 50001:2018 (Energy Management System) certified company, which committed to continuous reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint through various initiatives. Moreover, the airport’s efforts for renewable energy management and improving the air quality of the airport has been recognised and published by the ACI-ICAO Eco-Airport Toolkit in both 2014 and 2021. In line with its other green and energy-efficient initiatives, Mumbai International Airport keeps a close tab on noise management, air quality monitoring, waste management, as well as climate change, which helps maximise its efficiency with minimum environmental damage and in line with the group’s commitment towards excellence in energy efficiency.
In addition, the airport understands the relevance of growing concerns over climatic vulnerabilities and resource criticalities, hence the airports progression to incorporate environmental dimensions into every decision-making process. The airport continues to stay committed to its goals of providing the best-in-class facilities to the passengers with reduced environmental impacts. Lastly, Mumbai International Airport continues to focus on conserving energy, increasing the share of renewable energy, and optimising the use of energy throughout its operations.
