Heathrow 3rd runway – aerospace industry reaction

Reacting to the High Court judgement on the third runway at Heathrow Matthew Knowles, spokesman for A|D|S, the UK’s aerospace, defence and security trade organisation, said “The UK aviation industry has established the Sustainable Aviation initiative and its CO2 Roadmap demonstrates how, through the use of new technology, the industry will meet the predicted threefold rise in passenger demand to 2050 while simultaneously reducing its carbon dioxide emissions back to 2000 levels. Therefore, the case for the third runway at Heathrow is still strong, especially when the economic and employment benefits for both the whole country and the region around the airport are also considered.

“The Committee on Climate Change report noted that aviation could grow by 60 per cent and still be on target to meet the Government’s emissions target to 2050. Heathrow expansion is worth only part of this total. Furthermore, according to the UK Government’s Stern Report aviation is responsible for two per cent of global man-made carbon dioxide emissions, which would rise to three per cent by 2050 if no action were taken. In fact a huge amount of money is being invested in research by the aerospace industry to cut the fuel burn of aircraft still further, which reduces the fuel bills for their customers – the airlines – as well as cuts emissions.”
